Taekwon Do was first established in 1955 by General Choi Hong Hi the first effort to unify the Kwans.    From 1960 to 1970, under the direction of the Korean government, the Kwans unified under two governing bodies.  The International Taekwondo Federation and the World Taekwondo Federation.  In 1965 the Korean Taekwondo Federation was formed with General Choi as the first President.  The Government picked the top five styles to be sanctioned as Tae Kwon Do, and the first style to be recognized was Chung Do Kwan.

In 1967, 4th Dan Edward Sell founded the first Chung Do Kwan  school in Trenton, MI, and Master Kim, 6th Dan, Mr. Sell’s Instructor, opened his Chung Do Kwan school in South Bend, IN.  Master Kim had other schools in Niles, MI, Detroit, MI, Louisville, KY, Michigan City, IN and Summitville, IN.

Master Kim passed away in 1976 and his legacy still is growing.  The American Midwest Taekwondo Association was established with four schools.  The original members of the AMTA were Fred Walliser, Steve Van Camp, Ramillies Walliser, Martin Neagu and Frank Fabiano.
